Hand Scraped Hardwood Flooring
Hand scraped hardwood flooring has become a popular choice in today's upscale homes and commercial buildings. A newer trend rooted in history, distressed floors were hand scraped on site to make the floors flat before today's modern sanding methods. Now, hand scraping is done to add texture, richness and a unique look to the floor.
In an effort to reduce high labor costs, manufacturers created machine-made distressed floors. Cheaper imitations of the real thing, the problem with machine distressing is that the pattern repeats, creating an unnatural feel to the floors.
True hand scraped hardwood flooring is done by hand which, when done properly, creates a truly one-of-a-kind floor. These floors differ greatly from one floor to the next in the amount of texture added and the skill of the person scraping the floor.
Some manufacturers just dent, scoop or rough the floor whereas others sand the floor unevenly to create a worn look. Still others scrape the entire surface of the floors, which creates the most unique hand made look. Some product lines also allow you to choose between heavy, medium and light scraping. True artisans can create a distressed look complete with wormholes, splits and other naturally occurring character markings.
